I use Valtrex once daily, and it works for me. The thing about it though, like with a lot of meds, you have to take it at the same time EVERY day. Go to that website, and on the left side, it gives you other options, you may check them out and talk to your doctor about switching.
References :
http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/valacyclovir.htm

It's expensive & in my opinion NOT WORTH IT.....Valtrex, zovirax - all of those seemed to keep the virus under my skin (and itching!!) for over a week -but did prevent the actual outbreak...but you're also contagious during the itching...so I found that to be stupid!

L-Lysine (in the vitamin section) 500mg/day seems to help keep them away better

When I feel the PREsymptoms (tingling or itching) I'll rub hand sanitizer or rubbing alcohol on the area & that makes alot of outbreaks NOT happen!

If you're already broken out - a little Abreva (also over-the counter) will kill the virus in the sores - just do that on day ONE then hydrogen peroxide helps dry it out so it'll heal quicker (steer clear of ANY gooey things like neosporin - will keep it from scabbing up)
References :
20+ years with genital herpes - tried it all!

Valtrex is supposed to be the best, and it knocks it dead for me.

However, it is like any medicaiton, reactions are individual and one may suit you more than another - valtrex is the only one I've tried.

On the plus side, valtrex is the most expensive, so your other options will be cheaper. You could try acyclovir (zovirax) or famciclovir (famvir) too, they might work better for you. Plus, in studies prior to the discovery of valtrex, l-lysine was found to reduce outbreaks and is available from the healthfood store.
