It really depends on your body. Do some research regarding diet and stress. It has helped me out alot.

Every person is different. Some people have several outbreaks a year, while some people go years without outbreaks. Like B.J. C said, there are SO many different factors.

The first genital herpes outbreak, or initial outbreak, is usually the longest and the most severe. It can take up to a couple weeks to heal with medication, and even longer without medication.

Reoccurring outbreaks are usually much shorter and less severe then the first one. These outbreaks can take anywhere from a few days to a couple weeks to heal.

Again, EVERYONE is different.

I have personally had genital herpes for 6+ years. My reoccurring outbreaks usually last around 5 days, but I’ve been outbreak free for over 2 years (without taking daily suppressive therapy).

Usually depends on your age, how sexually active you are and your stress level. Stress is a big factor in Herpes Simplex 1. It is a virus which is actually in all of us, but only comes out in extreme cases of stress. Also, it can be contracted from another and transmitted to you. A breakout can last for several days to a week at a time and you should refrain from any sexual activity at this time. If this is something that you just contracted, then you will get it more frequentyly, then say somebody that has had it for 5 or more years.

It depends on so many different factors that every person’s experience can be different.

Some factors that will affect the amount of recurrences:

-whether it is a HSV-1 or HSV-2 genital infection (HSV-2 causes more outbreaks than HSV-1 genital infections)

-how long the person has had the genital infection — outbreaks tend to decrease each year

-trigger factors: menstrual cycle, emotional stress, illness (esp with fever), sexual intercourse, surgery, and certain medications can all be trigger factors resulting in relapses

-prior infection with the "other" HSV can help to reduce the severity of the illness

As far as how long they last,

-the first outbreak of HSV-2 genital herpes can last longer than any future outbreaks (16.5 days for men, 22.7 for women — mean not average)

-future outbreaks, if they occur, usually have a duration of 9.3-10.6 days for the lesion itself.
