Herpes Breakout, Acyclovir? How much? …?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Herpes breakout

What is the normal milligram amount / doseage of Acyclovir to take for a herpes breakout, right now? …

These are some rough guidelines on dosage of oral acyclovir for Genital Herpes:

- Treatment of Initial Genital Herpes: 200 mg every 4 hours, five times daily for 10 days.

- Chronic Suppressive Therapy for Recurrent Disease: 400 mg two times daily for up to 12 months, followed by re-evaluation. Alternative regimens have included doses ranging from 200 mg three times daily to 200 mg five times daily. The frequency and severity of episodes of untreated genital herpes may change over time. After 1 year of therapy, the frequency and severity of the patient’s genital herpes infection should be re-evaluated to assess the need for continuation of therapy with acyclovir.

- Intermittent Therapy: 200 mg every 4 hours, five times daily for 5 days. Therapy should be initiated at the earliest sign or symptom (prodrome) of recurrence.

It would be best to consult a physician before starting treatment since this is not a "benign" medication…

it depends. Right now, i am 34 weeks pregnant and my doctor prescribed me 200mg of acyclovir 5 times a day for 5 days. 2 yrs ago, my doctor prescribed me 500mg of Valtrex once a day for years but when i went to OB/GYN, she said do not take it regularly. Take it when it outbreaks 2 of 500mg 3 times a day for 3 days. Because the medicine will not be good for kidneys and liver, she asked me to take it only when the symptoms show or outbreak. She also asked me to take vitamins regularly and which will help me to reduce stress and herpes outbreak. So, ask your doctor which option is good for you!
