I adopted a cat from an animal shelter about a year ago who from day one exhibited a runny nose, swollen eyes, etc. Took her into the vet and she was diagnosed with FHV-1. About every 2 to 3 months she displays symptoms of the virus and becomes very lethargic and I take her into the vet. The only real treatment she receives there is a homeopathic remedy which seems to work slowly, if at all. Here are my questions: Should I continue to take her to the vet when the symptoms appear or let the virus run its course and if you have experience with cats with this problem, what supplements/medications/food have you given for treatment? I have been giving her a high quality wet food.

Herpes conjunctivities does not get "cured". It is a recurring problem for the cat. I wish you had mentioned which "homeopathic" remedy was being used for her. Ask your vet about using L-lysine as a dietary supplement for her as it can help many cats when there are "flare-ups" of the virus and may prevent a lot of vet trips. It is important that the cat have the best possible diet to keep her immune system strong and that issues of stress be addressed when there are flar-ups.

Lysine. 250 to 500 milligrams tweice a day for up to five days for an acute episode. Break open the capsule and mix the contents into the food.

why does it occur? is smoking the cause? how can we cure it? he’s on antibiotics. apart from those, any remedy? plz lemme know. its very bad to c him in pain…

Herpes does not have a cure. You can control the symptoms with many different medications, usually prescribed by a doctor. And it’s definately not caused by smoking, it is a sexually transmitted disease.

For my mate bless her…she’s pulling her hair out. Has been bathing in bath salts and sitting on a bag of peas. Anything else to try??
To confirm – she has seen a doctor and has some anti inflamitary stuff but wondering if there is anything else she can do to ease the pain!

Herpes is a painful and re-occurring STD. There are medications to reduce the outbreaks, and creams to help sooth. But as for what she is going through, there is no solution. Induce as much pain on the guy that gave it to her is my only suggestion.

I just got over my first outbreak (which is known to be the worst), & I wanted to find faster and more reliable treatment for it. I ordered a natural oil treatment last time, & even though it worked, it took forever to finally heal & the bottle had already run out. Plus I smelt like a FrEaKiN InSeNcE Stick…Piece of Junk! So I really dont want to keep throwing money out on useless products, so if anyone knows a good treatment that have personally helped your outbreaks, then please send ideas on over.

Also any home remedies and natural cures are a help. When i first got it, i learned a lot from going to websites such as these and was just interested in what ya’ll might have to say.

Thanks to all those who are actually trying to help. I never once asked for a "Cure", i asked for a treatment… And yes i have already stacked up on all the vitamins that are recommended and all the anti-fungal creams and powders that have been recommended.

Suppressive medication should work for you. Acyclovir, Valtrex, or Famvir are the most common meds to help suppress outbreaks. Talk to your doctor about a prescription. From what I understand, you can take it only when you have an outbreak, or you can take it daily, depending on how frequent your symptoms are. There is no clinical evidence that natural remedies work for herpes, at least as far as I know. Save your money.
