Many people who contract genital herpes may not show any symptoms. Some may show mild symptoms that are taken as something else, while others may get severe problems.
Genital herpes occurs in episodes. When you contract the virus, the virus travels to the nerve centers near the spinal cord. It travels back from there to the genital area and breaks out from time to time.

First Episode-

The first episode begins within a fortnight of contact. Some people get severe symptoms of herpes in this episode while others may get very mild symptoms of herpes during the first episode. The main symptom is appearance of lesions. You may see blisters filled with fluid or ulcers. The blisters rupture in to ulcers in few days and crust and heal within a month. The common areas are: on the vulva, penis, near anus, thighs, and inside vagina. Commonly women get more severe symptoms then men. In adults with HSV-1, the most common early symptoms are headache and fever. Additional symptoms include intellectual impairment, aphasia, meningeal signs, seizures, and paresthesias. Early treatment is crucial to a good outcome, and empirical acyclovir therapy can be initiated before a definitive diagnosis is established.
The virus cannot be cultured routinely from CSF, though lymphocytic pleocytosis and elevations in protein concentrations are observed. CSF viral cultures are positive for HSV in fewer than 5% of patients. Anti-HSV antibodies often do not appear until 1-3 weeks after symptom onset; therefore, antibody culture is helpful only in retrospective diagnosis.
EEG also can reveal focal temporal abnormalities, which are seen in 80% of patients; a normal EEG is believed to exclude the diagnosis. Periodic lateralized epileptiform discharges also support the diagnosis, but this finding is nonspecific. Historically, a brain biopsy provided a definitive diagnosis, but this procedure is not highly sensitive and can result in complications, including hemorrhage and edema at the biopsy site.

The best genital herpes cure is prevention. A wide variety of barrier contraceptives are currently available, with the latex condom most frequently advocated for use in prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Condoms are now available as both female and male versions, and may be coated with lubricant, spermicide or antiinfective agent.
The latex condom provides a mechanical barrier to infectious agents. The efficacy of the barrier in preventing STIs depends on the permeability of the latex. In their function as a contraceptive, condoms would have to be impermeable to spermatozoa, which are approximately 3000 nm in size. HSV-2 is considerably smaller than spermatozoa, at about 160 nm, and HIV is smaller still at 125 nm.
Electron microscopy of male condoms shows an absence of full-thickness pores, but occasional pits secondary to imperfections in manufacturing. Permeability depends not just on the size of any pores in the latex barrier, but also variables such as the shape of the infectious agent, surface tension, temperature, pressure and pH of the environment.
